A 2500W power supply monster eats RTX 4090s for breakfast at FSP

Not so long ago, the limit of 1 kW was still considered an astounding step, based on the new products seen at computex, the range of around 3000 W will soon be the benchmark of the top category.

Looking at the power supplies presented at the exhibition that ends today, perhaps it is now truly possible to declare that we have entered the era of ATX 3.0 standard units. In addition to the unique power connection tailored to video cards, the new generation power sources may be able to do a little more in terms of efficiency and lifespan than their predecessors, and can also be recommended for high-consumption desktop processors of our time.

In our opinion, the name of FSP does not need to be introduced to anyone, they have been able to provide high quality for home and corporate use for decades (well, well, sometimes there were some mistakes in the selection of components…), and one of the main mottos of their appearance at computexes was the environmentally friendly approach and sustainability. .

In addition to the marketing content, this can be an important basis for the future, since it does not matter which operating parameters we can count on for the given power supply for many years. The 80 Plus ratings give you enough confidence, but when you look at the Cannon Pro model, that crazy ‘eco-friendly’ multiverse just opens up.

Is life good with four RTX 4090s?

Certainly not for gamers, since multi-GPU support has practically completely disappeared from the creation of gaming experiences, but in configurations tuned to special tasks and calculations, the four top models can perform many times more than what an average high-end PC would be able to do. This, however, requires a huge power supply, and the FSP engineers thought that they would not only reduce the typical consumption of individual hardware elements, but also draw the limit at 2500 W, counting with a considerable allowance.

The Cannon Pro is not the typical RGB LED display model, it was not easy to find the novelty among the displayed power supplies at first. The “power plant” is located inside the gray frame, the usual size for this performance category, about which the manufacturer proudly advertises the VGA support of the four peaks. The modular cable connection supports this in two ways: two of the 12+4-pin 12VHPWR interfaces can be used, while the other two RTX 4090s can be brought to life with the six 8-pin PCIe power adapters.

The uniqueness (i.e. brutality) ends here, the motherboard and CPU power supply can be provided along the usual connections, while five outputs are planned for the peripherals. The 80 Plus Platinum plecsin can also be called a mandatory specification element, even above 1 kW, it doesn’t matter what the efficiency of the power supply is. The 89% value guaranteed in this way at 100% load is a great indicator in itself, but at such utilization it means a loss of around 200 W. It is not much, but where they are able to fully discharge this power supply, it is believed that paying the electricity bill will not be a problem.

Power consumption in green

There is no problem with the existence of the Cannon Pro in itself, but it is increasingly difficult to reconcile “green IT” and sustainability with the uncontrolled power demand of PC components. FSP was not the only one to exhibit a power supply unit with a total power of 2-2.5 kW at its stand, and the four RTX 4090 drives became a kind of fetish at Computex.

Undoubtedly, such a presentation is powerful and spectacular, but after the splendor and excitement of the exhibition, it would be better to come down to earth again and plan the PC future with more rational solutions.
