60 drunk drivers were caught during Christmas traffic control

The Helsinki police supervised the Christmas traffic in an enhanced manner.

Enhanced monitoring of Christmas traffic was carried out in Helsinki on November 18-20, 25-27. and 2–4 December 2022. In total, 9,486 motorists were blown over during the three weekends. A rapid drug test was performed on 43 drivers, it is reported on the poliisi.fi website.

– The results can be characterized as significant. In addition to the traffic police, a large number of field patrols also took part in the control, so we were able to effectively monitor Christmas traffic around the city, the head of the Helsinki Police Department’s traffic control function, chief inspector Dennis Pasterstein tells.

During the monitoring, a total of 58 cases of drunk driving due to the use of alcohol or drugs were recorded in Helsinki. 42 of these were basic forms of drunk driving. There were 16 serious cases of drunk driving. In addition, 14 wanted persons were found during the surveillance.

– Of the motorists who are blown over on weekdays, about one in seven hundred blows over the drink-driving limit. Now the number was slightly higher, but corresponds to a typical weekend night, Pasterstein says.
