52 drugs covered by SGK will be removed from the reimbursement list

With its new decision, the Social Security Institution (SGK) will no longer pay for 52 drugs that were previously prescribed for prescriptions and that patients could receive free of charge for years. Pharmacist Nurten Saydan, Chairman of the All Pharmacist Employers Union (TEIS), said that among the drugs removed from the list, there are muscle relaxants, painkillers and anti-inflammatory sprays, mouth and throat sprays most used during the pandemic period, and dental gels used for teething pain in babies.

The equivalent drug base price application was also reduced to 5 percent. Saydan, regarding the amendment, said, “Since the SSI will not reimburse 52 drugs after 15 October, and five working days after the notification, 147 drugs will be paid in one box per ten days and at a fixed price to be determined by the institution, the price difference will be higher. In addition, the equivalent price reference band differences were reduced from 10 percent to 5 percent. The difference to be taken from equivalent drugs increases by 5 percent. The price difference that will come out of the pocket of the citizen will be increased,” he said.

Saydan stated that savings cannot be made in health and said: “We think that this regulation is a start and that other drug groups will gradually be excluded from the scope of payment. Citizens’ access to medicines will be prevented and the fee for medicines from their pockets will be increased. Everything is saved, but health is not saved.”

President of the Istanbul Chamber of Pharmacists, Zafer Cenap Sarıalioğlu, said, “We have witnessed many times before that the prices of drugs that are excluded from the scope of reimbursement increase after a while and that citizens with reduced purchasing power cannot access these drugs. It is obvious that inequality in access to health will increase even more. These decisions are not in accordance with the understanding of the social state, which undertakes the duty of protecting health. We call for the review of the decisions, to turn from the wrong as soon as possible, and we emphasize once again: There is no saving in health,” he said.
