4.4 million cars will not be built this year due to lack of chips

A global chip shortage will mean 4.4 million fewer cars will be built this year, according to AutoForecast Solutions. From the beginning of the year to last week 1,381,200 cars were not built in Europe, a figure expected to rise to 1,549,800 by the end of the year.

There are already 1,475,600 cars unbuilt in the US and a total of 1,536,600 cars are expected to be unbuilt by the end of 2022. In South America 216,800 fewer cars will be manufactured this year, while in Asia (excluding China) the annual production decline will amount to 848,700 cars.

In China the reduction in annual production will be limited to 221,300 cars, while in the Middle East and Africa the reduction will amount to 49,500 cars by the end of the year.
