3.5 GHz frequency band not available until the end of 2023

The 3.5 GHz frequency band in the Netherlands cannot be put into use until the end of next year at the earliest. This is the conclusion of an independent government advisory committee. This frequency should give 5G a boost.

At the moment, the 3.5 GHz band is still used by the satellite company Inmarsat. Emergency, urgent and safety communication at sea and in the air is provided from reception dishes in the Frisian Burum.

Inmarsat does not want to stop its activities just like that, because of the importance for the safety of shipping and aviation and went to court last year.

The Ministry of Economic Affairs then asked an external, independent advisory committee to look for possible solutions.

The committee recommends that Inmarsat move its activities to a location in Greece, but that cannot be done before 2024.
