On Friday, at least 27 people, mostly children, were killed when a mortar shell exploded near the town of Qoryoley in the Southern Shabelle region of Somalia. Another 53 people were injured, Reuters reported.
A representative of the local government specified that a group of children found an unexploded mortar shell that exploded when handled.
Local authorities subsequently appealed to the government and humanitarian organizations to remove mines and grenades from the area.
Residents said the unexploded grenades children were playing with were being used by warring factions in Somalia.
