Customs authorities seized 204 gold bars weighing 23 kg from the cargo hold of a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight from Oman to Dhaka. The flight goes to Dhaka via Chittagong. BG 122 flight landed in Dhaka around 11:30 am on Thursday.
Officials of the Preventive Wing of Customs, who were prepared ‘on the basis of secret information’, seized the consignment estimated to be worth around Tk 25 crore, but Customs could not identify anyone involved in the incident.
Dhaka Customs House Additional Commissioner Kazi Farid Uddin said the gold bars were found wrapped in cloth. The cargo hold is next to the aircraft toilet. Toilet partitions can also be removed to store them in the cargo hold.
Customs officer Kazi Farid said, “The bars may have been thrown into the cargo hold by unscrewing one of the toilets.”
He said that legal action will be taken after proper investigation in this matter.
However, OC Azizul Haque Miya said that no case has been filed in the airport police station regarding the matter.
