30554 requests to delete illegal distribution… 30 times more in 6 years
The deletion completion rate was only 42.3%, “the need for government-level response”
The number of cases of copyright infringement on K-contents increased sharply last year.
According to data released by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism on the 3rd, lawmaker Jeon Jae-soo of the National Assembly Culture, Sports and Tourism Committee (and the Democratic Party) released 30554 requests to delete Internet addresses due to illegal distribution of K-content last year. This is a 30-fold increase from 16,99 cases in 2015, six years ago.
Requests for deletion have been pouring in, but the response has been slow. In 2015, the completion rate was 99%. Last year, it was 42.3% (as of August), less than half. The scope of the infringement spread not only to China but also to Southeast Asia.
Thailand (45.7%) showed the lowest figure in the cumulative deletion rate survey. Vietnam (57.6%), China (67.1%), and the Philippines and Indonesia (48.8%) were all equally unsatisfied.
The most affected sector is music. From 523 cases in 2019 to 16,720 cases last year, it has increased by about 32 times. The number of broadcasts and movies increased 2.5 times from 81,088 in 2019 to 205,338 last year.
In the cumulative deletion rate over the same period, music was the lowest at 27.9%. Webtoons and TV/movies accounted for 48.8% and 50.7%, respectively.
“The popularity of K-contents is making the subject of copyright infringement and countries wider,” said former lawmaker Jeon.
