By the way, this is it the first repair of almost all tunnels in almost a hundred years of history the famous narrow-gauge railway “Sharganska osmica”.
Workers Serbian railway infrastructure they completely arranged the interior of 20 tunnels, by installing drainage wells that enabled water drainage, and a new layer of concrete was installed on the walls of the tunnel by a special method.
The specificity of the reconstruction of the tunnel stems from the fact that they are works were performed on the only narrow-gauge railway in Serbia, and therefore it was not possible to work in the way it is now performed on normal-gauge railways.
The transport of workers and equipment and materials was done with the help of a small trolley more than half a century old, which was specially adapted for this purpose. The trolley also drew a compressor, electric motors that mixed the concrete, as well as a spiral that enabled the concrete to be thrown along the walls of the tunnel.
Due to the volume of work, the works were performed in four phases.
In the first phase, the most famous and longest carp tunnel “Aleksandar”, about 1,667 meters long, was reconstructed.
In the second phase, tunnels number 41, 44, 50 and 51 were built, while in the third phase, tunnels number 40, 42, 43, 45, 46, 47, 48 and 49 were renovated. In the fourth phase, the remaining seven tunnels were completed. number 33 to tunnel 39.
Uniform numbers indicating the name of the tunnel have been placed at the entrances to each of the tunnels, and the inscription “Alexander” on the longest tunnel has been renewed.
Performed works on tunnels have ensured their static stabilization over the next three decades.
The tunnels have been significantly damaged over the past decades. Built in the 1920s, they were not made of reinforced concrete, so over the years, the interior of the tunnel was damaged.
In addition, the experts determined the damage caused as a result of the effect of steam traction on the interior of the tunnel, and a large problem was created by large amounts of water in this area.
On the total length of the railway of 15.5 kilometers, on the route Mokra Gora – Shargan Vitasi, the height difference of 300 meters is crossed.
