AV-TEST tested how burdensome antivirus applications are on the Windows 10 operating system. Microsoft did the worst in the study.
AV-TEST found, that Microsoft Defender loaded system resources the most out of 18 different antivirus applications. Defender on many use on their computer, as it comes as a standard protection with the Windows operating system.
The study tested the anti-virus programs against about 12,000 malware mixed with 1.5 million files. In addition to Defender, Avast, AVG, Avira, Bitdefender, F-Secure, Kaspersky, Malwarebytes, Norton, McAfee and Trend Micro were also included.
Microsoft Defender scored a full six in the protection and usability categories, but 5/6 in performance was the worst of all the programs tested. According to AV-TEST, the consumption of resources was significantly higher than other anti-virus programs. AV-TEST did not give exact numbers apart from the score.
14 prevention applications received a top rating, i.e. at least 17.5 total points. In addition to Defender, ESET and Microworld got 17 points. PC Matic received 15 points for poor usability. However, AV-TEST emphasized that even these applications offer a very reliable level of protection.
