CHARIKAR (AFGHANISTAN): Rescue teams today continued their search to find the bodies still trapped, in the rubble of a residential building, after flash floods caused by heavy rains that killed at least 162 residents.
At least 100 people were reported dead in the city of Charikar, northern Afghanistan after being hit by floods on Tuesday, causing landslides involving hundreds of buildings.
A laborer working in the capital, Abdul Ghayor, said he continued to return to Charikar to find his family, however his house was swept away by the current.
“All my family members are gone,” he said, adding that 10 of his relatives were found dead and one of them was still missing.
Most residents are also reported to have assisted the rescue team in the search process.
They used tools such as shovels and also cleaned the pile of rubble to facilitate the process of finding the bodies of the victims of the tragedy.
Meanwhile, the city’s community leader, Safiullah Safi, said most of the housing estates there were destroyed.
“The situation here is hit by a major disaster with so many residents dying and still missing, including children,” he said.
In a related development, Senior Officer, Ministry of Disaster Management, Qasim Haidary, said the total loss due to the disaster is still under assessment.
He said about 200 homes were completely destroyed, while 600 livestock were also killed in the provincial capital of Parwan.
He said about 1,000 families in the province were given food aid and shelter.
At the same time, the government also called on international aid organizations to provide emergency assistance. – AFP
