A day laborer was reportedly stabbed to death by a scoundrel in a tea shop in Pekua during an altercation between two youths who lost a bet on an India-Pakistan cricket match. It is said that 3 more people were injured in this incident.
The incident took place at Bazarpara area of Magnama Union of Pekua Upazila around 9:30 pm on Sunday.
According to the news, some local youths were watching the India-Pakistan T20 Asia Cup match on television in the tea shop of local MUP Noor Mohammad Madur’s brother Maulvi Abdul Mabud in Bazar Para area. At one point, local Nurul Amin’s son Naibu (20) made a bet with Abdul Malek’s son Parvez (22). Later, the incident turned into a clash between the two parties due to an argument between the two regarding the betting money.
Eyewitness sources said that during the incident Naibu Parvez’s father Abdul Malek (48) was stabbed and he fell on the ground.
Parvez, his brother Hoshain and Bulbul Akhtar were also injured.
Later local people rescued the injured Abdul Malek and took him to Pekua Hospital where the doctors declared him dead. The doctors of the hospital said that the deceased Abdul Malek had a stab wound in his chest.
The deceased Abdul Malek is the son of Chayed Ahmed of Bainaghona area of Magnama Union. Locals said he is a day labourer.
Bakhtiyar Uddin, the niece of the deceased, said, “My uncle-in-law Abdul Malek died in the hospital when he stabbed my uncle-in-law Abdul Malek during a clash between two parties over cricket betting at the tea shop of Maulvi Abdul Mabud in the Bazar Para area.”
When asked about this matter, Magnama UP Chairman Yunus Chowdhury said, “At one stage of the dispute over playing cricket in the tea shop, a fight started between the two parties. Meanwhile, a day laborer named Abdul Malek was killed.”
On receiving information about the incident, a team of police led by Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Pekua Police Station Farhad Ali raided the spot and arrested the attacker Nurul Amin and his daughter from Rajakhali.
However, the OC’s mobile phone number was called several times around 1 am to find out about this, but it was not possible to get his statement as he did not receive it.
